James Craigie

James Craigie (1851-17 August 1935) was a Member of Parliament for Timaru, in the South Island of New Zealand.

Member of Parliament

James Craigie represented the Timaru electorate in the New Zealand House of Representatives for fourteen years from 1908 to 1922.

Independent Liberal

In the 1919 election, Craigie broke from the Liberal Party and stood as an Independent Liberal or Progressive Liberal [1]

Craigie was born in Perthshire, Scotland and came to New Zealand in 1867. He was a very successful importer and merchant in Timaru[2]

James Craigie served on the Timaru Borough Council and was Mayor of Timaru for 10 years from 1902 to 1912 (A Dictionary of New Zealand Biography, edited by G.H. Scholefield, Vol. 1, p. 181, 1940, Department of Internal Affairs, Wellington).

Craigie was also a member of the Legislative Council from 1923 to 1930. He died at Kingsdown, near Timaru on 17 August 1935.
